The New York Counseling Center was founded in 1971. The first class of the Psychoanalytic Training Institute began in 1978. In 1981 the New York State Board of Regents granted the Institute a provisional charter and in 1995 we received our absolute charter. The Institutes three year course of study offers intensive training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Our goal is to provide graduates of the program with a strong foundation in psychodynamic theory that is thoroughly integrated with clinical practice. The curriculum embraces the four psychologies of psychoanalysis: Freudian Drive Theory, Ego Psychology, Self Psychology and Object Relations. Courses in the technique of psychotherapy and supervised work with patients in our clinic provide students with opportunities to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in seminars to the practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The academic year is divided into three trimesters. In the first year students take two courses each trimester; in the second and third years they take three courses each trimester. The additional course in the second and third year is a case presentation seminar which is designed to enable students to observe the process of therapy over a period of time in patients with a wide range of diagnoses. In the technique courses students learn about transference, resistance, countertransference, the listening process and the use of therapeutic interventions as they apply to personality structure, diagnosis and the treatment process itself. Courses in the treatment of various personality disorders are also part of the curriculum. Students who graduate from The New York Counseling Center's Psychoanalytic training institute are fully prepared for private practice. The New York Counselig Center provides opportunities for private referrals throughout the three years of training and upon graduation all students' cases are transferred to their private practices. An ongoing affiliation with the Institute and the clinic ensures a continuing source of patient referrals. Requirements: Applicants must have a minimum of a Master's degree in social work, psychology, counseling or nursing. No previous psychotherapy is required. However, a minimum of 300 hours of Individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy must be completed prior to graduation. Previous individual psychotherapy may be credited towards the required hours. Classes are held at the Institute, located at 160 West End Avenue on Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. Students select their individual supervisors from our faculty roster and schedule supervision at their own convenience. Please call us at 212-362-1086 if you have any questions about the training program or if you would like to receive a manual and application. You are also invited to add your name to our mailing list for semiannual Scientific Meetings on topics in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
