She is a member of Mississippi City United Methodist Church, where she serves as financial secretary and as substitute teacher for her Sunday School class. Additionally, she teaches Spanish to the three- and four-year-olds at Wesley Academy, her churchs pre-school. She and her husband, Monk (Waller), live in Gulfport with their high-maintenance poodle, Curly. Northern District Director Nominee: Linda Norwood, Kappa When Linda taught social studies, English and Spanish, she would often assign papers of a biographical nature. The kids would without fail get the person born and killed off in the first sentence. So Linda tells us she was born 61 years ago and is obviously still kicking. An only child, Linda spent the first 27 years of her life in Chillcothe, Ohio, and the last batch in Mississippi. One of her children is a Yankee and the other is a Rebel; thats what happens when they are born 12 years apart. Linda received her college degrees while teaching. A county district needed Spanish before she received a B.A. in history from Ohio University. In the 1970's, when she moved to Mississippi, her social life was slim to none (and I am quoting Linda) so she took courses at Ole Miss while she taught English at Oxford High School (she received a M. Ed. in English). She finally had to quit teaching to finish the Ph. D. in Educational Leadership. Since receiving that degree, Linda has spent her time one way or another in the Migrant Education Program. She was a migrant tutor, migrant project coordinator, state recruitment officer for the Department of Education, and presently has 52 school districts from Tishomingo County to George County in which she provides clothing, school supplies, instructional supplies for the teachers, and advocates for the kids in these districts. As an aside, Linda named her project the Eastern State Line Migrant Program, and it was not until recently that the initials of the program were ESL! Linda has been a member of the Delta Kappa Society for almost 10 years. The members in her chapter range in age from 92 to 35, and she feels that they are one of the most connected groups with which she has been involved. Linda does not believe the the common bond of teaching is the only element involved. She thinks perhaps it is the values we all have along with a good dose of common sense in a world that seems to be running amok. Lindas husband, Glen, is a retired school district superintendent. She states that he has been her best mentor through the years. Teris philosophy of membership in Delta Kappa Gamma is, In order for our organization to grow and thrive, we must continue to seek outstanding young women in our perspective fields. Women who will further the goals of our society and the field of education through active participation in the society at all levels.
