Before Worms Arrive

Trinity Ranch Vermiculture Division

You should prepare your worm bin ahead of time...proper bedding, good ventilation and correct moisture. Have a light source near the bin. Try to locate the bin where it does not receive any vibration from outside sources; refrigerator, washer, dryer, against a wall where thunder vibrations will affect it, etc. Worms hate vibration, and may travel. Add a small amount of good topsoil to provide grit (worms have no teeth, but, like birds, utilize a gizzard to digest their food), and inoculate your bin with the needed microbial life. It doesn't hurt to bury some food scraps ahead of time so they can start to break down...your worms will acclimate more quickly.
