Where we went yesterday was one of the coolest places we have been in all of Alaska. It's actually two towns -- McCarthy and Kennecott. Kennecott is an honest-to-God ghost town. It's the real chimichanga -- not one of those Disneyland-like places.

There are 40 red buildings that held an entire town and copper mine until 1938 when the copper ran out and it was abandoned. It's built on a mountainside, right next to a glacier.

It takes 3 and one half tiring hours at 20 mph over rugged, pot-hole filled roads to get there. At one point the road had washed out completely, but luckily there were graders there to fix it. But once you get there, it's just an incredible sight.

40 people live in the two towns all-year round now, despite the 50 below temperatures. It's now owned by the park service.

It was 45 degrees and raining our entire time there, so photography was challenging. I had to drag my camera out from beneath my coat,hold on to an umbrella and take the picture with the other.

The background behind these sheds is the Kennecott Glacier and the moraine that it left behind. A moraine is the debris left behind from a retreating glacier and is probably a good crossword puzzle to know.

In Alaska when you are done with a truck, it becomes a flower pot or a place to put signs.

This isn't a crooked picture -- all the houses look like this in McCarthy. No, we didn't take a flight on McCarthy Air.
