Inkblot: Western MA Literature

Inkblot (former working title, "Unabridged") is the literary magazine that Jesse and I are creating as a vehicle for the publishing of young writers in our area.

Inkblot

Every author wants one thing: publication. But why should we wait for some publishing fairy godmother to come along and bestow a contract on us? We can publish and distribute our own work, and we intend to do so. This is the concept behind Inkblot, the magazine of young, local authors in the western Massachusetts region.

We welcome submissions from anyone in the area. In fact, Inkblot may eventually open its pages to the work of writers living farther afield. Although we have not yet begun production and thus can't offer pay rates, rest assured that all authors will be paid; that's the point, after all.

Those who wish to submit work to Inkblot should send me the piece via email. You can find my email on the Contact page, and I would be pleased as fucking punch to receive something from you. There are, however, some guidelines to keep in mind.

- We will not accept any piece that is not a third or later draft. If your story looks like a second draft, we will send it back to you with a guide to proofreading (no offense intended).

- Inkblot is, at this point, solely for prose. We feel for a variety of reasons that poetry would be out of place; email me if you want to see the reasoning. That said, we are not beyond considering certain longer or narrative pieces. Don't expect that any poetry submissions will be accepted.

- If this magazine is to be taken seriously by the consuming public, we must make it worth that respect. Standards for submissions will be rigorous: don't think that because we're devoted to publishing work by young writers, we'll publish your Inuyasha fan-fiction (no offense intended to =QueenAlatariel). Any piece that is deemed to be potentially publishable will be mercilessly critiqued by me and sent back to its author for editing. This will be a dialogue; instead of handing the changes down to you, we will discuss them together. After all, it's your work.

- Inkblot encourages submissions whose perspective is other than ordinary. Pieces that are surreal or deal with unreality, that offer an unusal perspective, that somehow go beyond what is normal, are encouraged. I'm not saying that we want only Sci-Fi; for examples of what I mean, ask Jesse to show you some of his work. The stories are often set in our world, but with one change or unusual premise that allows the author to explore her story in a new way.

- This is a magazine for young authors. Anyone over 21 is old enough to do lots of things that we can't and therefore doesn't get to submit work to Inkblot. Go cry yourself to sleep over a glass of whiskey.

I may have forgotten something, and there may be future additions to this list. Please check this page before submitting anthing.

An Example Avatar

Each piece will be headed not only by the title and author's name, but by a 60x60 px avatar. These avatars will be visual indicators of the author (and thus can't be changed once you've been published); they provide a kind of recognition that can be simpler than that of names, as those of you who've been on dA must know. Since this magazine will be in greyscale, you'll be a little limited in your design.
