Day 1 (Sa) - 12/11/04 - Proestrus** - Minnie's 7th cycle begins - Spy and Minnie spend some quality time alone. The usual playing and running is noted. Minnie shows some flagging. Copulation not expected until Day 10. No copulation attempted.

Day 2 (Su) - 12/12/04 - Proestrus** - Minnie and Spy spend more time alone. More flagging is noted. There seems to be no hesitation from Minnie to allow Spy to do what he wants. No copulation attempted.

Day 3 (Mo) - 12/13/04 - Proestrus** - Not bleeding much. Minnie and Spy spending more time alone. No copulation attempted.

Day 4 (Tu) - 12/14/04 - Proestrus** - More Minnie and Spy time alone. No copulation attempted.

Day 5 (We) - 12/15/04 - Proestrus** - No copulation attempted.

Day 6 (Th) - 12/16/04 - Proestrus** - No copulation attempted.

Day 7 (Fr) - 12/17/04 - Proestrus** - First swab conducted by our genetic scientist, Dr. Mennick*. Check again on Day 9. No copulation attempted.

Day 8 (Sa) - 12/18/04 - Proestrus** - No copulation attempted.

Day 9 (Su) - 12/19/04 - Proestrus** - First blood test was done by Dr. Mennick*. First Progesterone test was 2 ng/ml. 2 ng/ml was expected. No copulation attempted.

Day 10 (Mo) - 12/20/04 - Proestrus** - No copulation attempted.

Day 11 (Tu) - 12/21/04 - Proestrus** - Second blood test was conducted by Dr. Mennick*. Second Progesterone test was still 2 ng/ml. 3-5 ng/ml was expected. No copulation attempted.

Day 12 (We) - 12/22/04 - Estrus*** - No copulation attempted.

Day 13 (Th) - 12/23/04 - Estrus*** - Third blood test was conducted by Dr. Mennick*. Third Progesterone test was 5 ng/ml. 3-5 ng/ml was expected. No copulation attempted.

Day 14 (Fr) - 12/24/04 - Estrus*** - Ovulation - Natural copulation was attempted after 3 p.m. Spy was willing and able. Minnie was unwilling.

Day 15 (Sa) - 12/25/04 - Estrus*** - First breeding Artificial Insemination (AI) was conducted by our genetic scientist, Dr. Mennick* on Chrismas day between 11 am and 12 noon. Spy's sperm count was only about 40, ideal is about 75. This was Spy's first breeding, a lower count was not suprising. It is unknown if the first AI was successful. Dr. Mennick* gave a 3:4 ratio success rate for the series.

Day 16 (Su) - 12/26/04 - Estrus*** - Second natural copulation was attempted at Rodina Borzoi and was unsuccessful. Second AI was conducted by Dr. Mennick* on the day after Chrismas between 12 am and 1 p.m. Spy's sperm count was higher at 60. It is suspected that the second AI was successful.

Day 17 (Mo) - 12/27/04 - Estrus*** - The third AI was conducted by Dr. Mennick* two days after Chrismas between 2 and 3 p.m. Spy's sperm count was lower at 45. This was the last AI planned. This ends this breeding.

Day 18 (Tu) - 12/28/04 - Estrus***
Day 19 (We) - 12/29/04 - Estrus***
Day 20 (Th) - 12/30/04 - Estrus***
Day 21 (Fr) - 12/31/04 - Diestrus****

**Proestrus: (average duration = 9 days; range = 3-17 days) Swelling of the vulva, the external tissue of the vaginal opening, and bloody discharge marks the beginning of the proestrus stage, also known as the follicular stage. During proestrus, the ovarian follicles, each containing ova, increase in size. Increasing amounts of estrogen hormone, secreted by the ovarian follicles, cause the cells of the vaginal walls to take-on a distinctive shape, a process known as cornification. Both the level of estrogen and vaginal cornification are useful indicators of proestrus.

***Estrus: (average duration = 9 days; range =3-21 days) Receptivity to mating marks the beginning of the estrus stage. Physiologically, estrus coincides with the predominant presence of cornified vaginal epithelial cells and an increase in serum progesterone levels to 2 ng/ml. Ovulation usually occurs 2 days following this increase in progesterone and hence, monitoring the levels of progesterone is an excellent indicator for timing breeding.

****Diestrus: (average duration = 2 months) Approximately 6 days after ovulation, the cornified vaginal epithelial cells will revert to a non-cornified state. This condition marks the beginning of diestrus. This stage ends when progesterone levels fall to less than 1 ng/ml just prior to whelping in the pregnant bitch or approximately 2 months after ovulation in the nonpregnant bitch.
