1971 Senior Class History

The 1971 Seniors have 12 members who have been here since the first grade. The members of that class are: Michael Grienert, Darryl Hodde, Roger Kruger, Dennis Luedtke, Kathy Mills, Don Peters, Janet Pfluger, Helen Prinz, Cynthia Randig, Darwin Steger, Ronnie Vorwerk and Lana Weiss. Our teacher was Mrs. Ruth Barron.

As we all know, the first grade is the time of learning many new things. For example, Darwin learned that silence is golden when he squealed on the class for talking and got his tail bronzed.

One rainy day, in the year of 1959, old lady, pardon us, Mrs. Barron, warned us not to go out into the rain, but as you probably know, our class does not take kindly to warnings, so "Super Michael" and his gang of romping rousers proceeded on their mission to conquer the muddy school ground. Our class learned that when a teacher gives a warning not to do something - that means DON'T DO IT. Instead of swinging from the swings, we swung from the Board of Education.

One day Mrs. Barron told Dennis to open a top window in the classroom - so, he got the stick and instead of opening the window, he broke it. Talk about someone crying - Dennis did.

2ND GRADE: Now, we have moved into the 2nd grade and Roxanna Seaton came to Pflugerville to join our class. Our Teacher was Mrs. Winnie Carrington.

Mrs. Carrington loved peppermint candy but not as much as we did. What we did while the lady was sleeping in her chair you wouldn't believe. She would give us a piece of peppermint if we had a sore throat. Talk about a bunch of sick kids - we were sick all year long.

By the way Darryl, did you ever bring the yardsticks you owe Mrs. Carrington after you broke all of hers?

3RD GRADE: As we advance to the 3rd grade, Pamela Fuchs joined our class. We liked Mrs. Carrington so much that we wouldn't give her up, so she was our teacher again this year.

This is the year that Darryl and Ronnie learned that the proper way to enter a restroom was through the door and not the roof.

A favorite pasttime for the 3rd grade boys was to plaster the restroom ceiling with wet paper towels. They would even talk to the girls through the restroom vents.

4TH GRADE: We were soon to meet our 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Margaret Nelson and the new student, Rene Bauhs.

Mrs. Nelson was a really cool teacher but she never believed anything our class told her, until one day, Dennis told her there was a rat in our classroom. Of course, she didn't believe him because it was also April Fool's Day, which makes it harder to believe. But, she soon changed her mind, when she saw the big rat running around the room.

We had a fast class, but not in intelligence. We got fourth place in running the mile, when we would race to answer the phone.

Has anybody seen Pamela's doll? She lost it in the 4th Grade and still hasn't found it.

5TH GRADE: Racing to the 5th grade we gained two new members, Amie Purdy and Jerry Moellenberg. Our teacher was Mrs. Wynona Simon.

This year Darryl found out how good a barber his dad was. It turned out that he wan't too good because the next day Darryl came to school looking like a bald eagle.

Jerry learned that he wasn't a mountain goat after he fell off the fence and cut his arm.

This year all the girls started to think about their futures. They started building rock houses and play houses. However, everybody had to watch out for Pamela and her teeth if you went into her house.

6TH GRADE: No one joined our class in the sixth grade. Our teacher was Mrs. Bernice Kuempel.

Darwin Steger learned never to hit girls on the bottom with a wet towel after Rene got through with him.

Janet never was a good shot but this time she missed hitting Jerry with a baby shoe and broke a window.

Dennis got a kick out of putting tacks into chairs but, Mrs. Kuempel got a bigger kick out of tacking him to a wall.

Jerry and Dennis learned never to throw paper balls at the wastebasket after they had to carried 5,212 paper balls to the wastebasket.

Pamela learned not to wear a new dress to school when Jerry had red fingernail polish in his possession.

7TH GRADE: Our class was now entering the "BIG" High School building with all those big kids. We considered ourselves little no longer -- we even got our very own lockers. We gained Diane Samuelson, Ben Kruger, Sandra Zwerneman, Kyle Collier, Joe Reichert, David Franklin and Archie Smith.

Our class invented a new sport this year, but Mr. Hendrickson didn't like it. It was eraser throwing. Instead of erasing boards, Mr. Hendrickson erased our lunch, P.E. and Band periods.

Jerry, Dennis and Don tried to play football with Pamela's shoe and had to miss P.E. for 2 weeks.

In the 7th Grade Mr. Hendrickson gave us our first lecture on the birds and the bees.

8TH GRADE: Buzzing on to the 8th grade Carroll Mixson, Richard Burk and Carolyn Cleveland joined us.

Janet, Helen, Kathy, Cynthia, Pamela, Lana and Dennis received band jackets as a reward for their outstanding service to the band.

Kyle and Jerry decided to play cops and robbers with water guns during their math class one day. They got a little wet, but Mr. Hendrickson dried them out right fast.

Jerry, Dennis, Archie, Don, Darryl, Ben, David and Roger started their football careers this year. One game, Jerry got hit in the head and couldn't remember anything, as if he could remember something before the hit.

Dennis & Kyle used to get a big kick out of tying the chairs together in band and watch everybody fall at one time.

9TH GRADE: We now joined the rest of the High School kids. We gained Mary Heep, Cynthia Settle, Mark Bledsoe, Andy Habecker and Steve Cummins. We elected Mr. George Simon as our Class Sponsor and we also elected Dennis & Diane as Class Favorites.

Rene represented the Freshman class on the cheerleading squad.

David liked football so much that he broke his ankle in the line of duty.

Jerry learned never to throw yellowjackets on Pamela after she stabbed him with a compass.

10TH GRADE: Corinne Casey, Timothia Bowie and Carol Wolff joined our class this year. We elected Mrs. Charles Mott as our Class Sponsor and Ben and Pamela as our Class Favorites.

Mark has a scar on his eye were he and another boy hit head on. They were both going after the same baseball but neither one got it.

This year the boys got their first taste of football on the varsity squad. Rene & Mary cheered the football team on this year.

The F.F.A. boys elected Helen as their sweetheart.

Dennis, David, Ben and Kyle thought gum tasted good until Mrs. Higgins sent them to the office.

11TH GRADE: Kathy Johns, Sue Slaugther, Roy Craver and Gene Schumann joined our class this year. We elect Mrs. Logan Bartz as our Class Sponsor and Janet & Don as Class Favorites.

Our junior year was filled with all kind of projects - some accomplished, some unaccomplished. We started to paint the bleachers. We got the bars painted, but not the seats. This was obvisouly unaccomplished. One of our most accomplished projects was starting a fund drive for Mrs. Dwayne Howell's daughter, Joyce, who has luekemia.

On May 2, 1920 the Junior Class gave the 1970 Seniors there Banquest and Prom at the Chariot Inn in Austin. You should have seen Mrs. Bartz's new style of shoes that night, one big white cast. She broke her ankle playing volleyball. Roxanna had the same style but she didn't make it to the banquet.

Our class held a car wash at the Arco Station along with a bake sale at Pfluger Meat Market. Both events turned out fine except for one catastophe, Lana cut her finger on a hub cap.

This year our class was honored by have 2 girls elected as queens: Helen Prinz was elected Homecoming Queen and Cynthia Randig was elected May Fete Queen at Richland.

The F.F.A. Boys elected Mary Heep as their Sweetheart.

Jerry & Dennis served as captains on the Panther football team this year. Ben broke his arm in summer football practice and didn't get to play this year.

Since Mary & Rene were doing such a good job at cheerleading, our class decided to let them cheer on the boys again this year.

12TH GRADE; OUR SENIOR YEAR: Well, we finally made it to our Senior Year in high school. Proudly, we hallowed the halls of P.H.S. with our seniority. This year Michael Casey joined our class. We elected Mr. Larry Francell as our Class Sponsor (who has done a wonderful job) and we elected Pamela & Gene as our Class Favorites.

The Senior Boys on the football team got to play in the State Game in San Angelo. They were Dennis, Jerry, David, Andy, Mark, Archie, Don, Darryl and Ben. Our Class would like to say, "Congratulations" to these men. David was out for a few games because of a broken collar bone but he made it back for the State game. Speaking of breaking things, Kyle let a horse fall on her and break her wrist. Speaking of horses, Corinne let her horse step on her foot - you should have seen her hopping around the halls.

Our Senior year was a year of Queens and Sweethearts. Mary was elected Homecoming Queen, Lana was elected May Fete Queen, Cynthia R. was elected Band Sweetheart, Sue was elected Football Sweetheart, Diane was elected FFA Sweetheart and Don & Helen were elected Most Popular in High School.

This year Cynthia R. got another ring for her left hand. She plans to be married on September 4th.

Cynthia R., Lana, Helen and Kathy received a sweater or blanket for sticking with the band their four years in high school. Cynthia S., Janet and Diane received basketball jackets for their service.

On May 3rd the Senior Class took a field trip to the Capitol to visit the Legislature. We got to hear Ex. Prime Minister Harold Wilson of Britian, Former President Lyndon Johnson and Gov. Preston Smith give speeches that day. Our class would like to thank Mrs. Marvin Burk, Richard's mom, for helping make this trip possible.

Our Senior Banquet and Prom was held at Tracor.

Here it is May 28, 1971 - Our Graduation Day.
