Generation 4

(15) WILLIAM JOE4 GOSS (ZACHARIAH3, JOSEPH2, STEPHENSON1), was born February 08, 1881, Webster County, Georgia, and died August 13, 1961, Donalsonville, Seminole County, Georgia. He married LENA ESTELLE MCEARCHERN, December 01, 1901, Parrott, Terrell County, Georgia.

The eldest son of Zachariah Benjamin and his fourth wife, Eva (or Delphia) Dismuke Goss, "Willie Joe" was born in Webster County, Georgia. As a young man he lived with his brother Jim, (1900), next door to his parents, and worked the farm. Lena was born in Lumpkin, Stewart County, Georgia, but also grew up in Webster County. After marrying they settled in the small town of Parrott, in Terrell County, where their first four children were born. The family then moved to Alabama, first to a farm in Webb, then later to Pinckard, where Willie Joe worked as a superintendent at the Southern Oil Mill (peanut oil). They moved to Dothan for awhile, then returned to Georgia, where Lena died in 1950. After his wife's death, Goss moved in with his daughter, Ruby, in South Bay, Florida.

Known to the children and grandchildren as "Papa", Goss lost his leg in a car accident and wore a peg leg for about twenty-five years, then later a wooden one. After the accident, he made mattresses for a living, stuffing the bedding, while Lena sewed the ticking.

In 1922, Zack moved to Brooks County to join his mother, and there met and married Hattie Erma Cannon. Zack and Hattie returned to Webster County, to the land he inherited from his father, where he worked as a farmer and cared for the animals in the neighborhood as a sort of self-taught veterinarian. He was an active Mason in the McDonald 172 Lodge in Pavo, Georgia.
Zack traveled for three years in Europe with his daughter, Anna Elizabeth, and while in Germany, was made an honorary member of the local Masons.
