The best way to get the attention of the two major parties is to NOT register to vote with them. That leaves you with two choices: Libertarian or Unaffiliated.

Registering Unaffiliated sends a strong message - you are not particularly thrilled with the R's and D's, and neither party can count on your vote.

Registering Libertarian sends an even stronger message - you want low taxes and the freedom to live your life your way. You are also interested in helping to build a viable third party so that you can have more choices on the ballot.

You can pick up a voter registration form at any local library or at the Board of Elections. You may also pick one up at one of our monthly meetings.

Registering Republican or Democrat sends them the message that you are happy with the way they are spending your tax dollars and creating new laws designed to "help" you.

A WASTED VOTE?

In 1992, Scott McLaughlin of High Point ran for governor as a Libertarian. With little money, he entered the race without much fanfare. Scott was determined to push an issue that he felt needed to be put on the table.

So he worked hard and was able to get his message out to enough people to get nearly 5% of the vote. In the world of politics, 5% is an astronomical figure for a small-party candidate to receive in a 3-way, high profile race.

Obviously, Scott had hit on a hot issue. As could be expected the Repubs and Demos took notice and came to an agreement some 5 years later on Scott's issue.

That is why today the sales tax on food isn't 6% anymore. Those brave and principled 5% made a huge difference in our lives.

NEVER let anyone tell you that a vote for us is a wasted vote. In fact, the only time you waste your vote is when you DON'T vote for your first choice.
