Flowers are my favorite photography subjects. I use the spot meter in the camera and get the exposure off the brightest spot on the pedals.
I like to find flowers where the sun is just shining on the flower and the background is in the shade. I have the camera set to 100 ISO or 50 and use a tripod. Using a lower ISO lets the shade go black. A higher ISO will show the background.
