"Hoorah for the Next man to Die"

"Hoorah for the Next man to Die" is a Aerial Campaign set during April 1917 using Lambourne Game's "Wings Over France" rules. Each player runs a Flight of Number 23 Squadron aircraft, currently assigned to the Amiens Sector of the Western Front. At this time, the Allies are about the start an aerial campaign to try and gain aerial superiority over the battlefield to cover an Allied ground offensive. Outmatched by Veteran German fliers in better aircraft, the forthcoming month will later be christened by historians as "Bloody April".

Freezing cold patrols in thick cloud, misty mornings, waterlogged boots, muddy airfields, bad French wine, stale bread, weeks and months old letters...Welcome to France Chum! And to the Amiens Sector and 23 Squadron in particular. Come on into the Officer's Mess, warm your spirits and lets talk.

The latest says that the Yanks will declare War on Fritz any day now, though it may take up to a year before they take the field in France. Much to do to hang on until then, though those tank contraptions used in the Somme late last year may help out somewhat with a bit of luck eh?

That bloodbath took a horrendous toll on our Army though, and the rumour mill says that a another big push may be on again soon to help prop up the Frenchies who have been also given a bloody nose at Verdun. The good news though is the recent advance forward in the wake of the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line - while it is eary days yet, it might be the start of a slide all the way back to Berlin! No doubt HQ will expect a "maximum effort' to support the PBI and have us flying around the clock to consolidate the gains on our section of the Front.

We all have to do our bit to beat the Boche though right? With those German submarines shotting everything in sight and Zepplin raids by nigth over Southern Engalnd and London, its getting to be a right nasty old war for them Folks at Home as well as us and the sooner we push Fritz back into Germany, the sooner it will be over. Can you believe its still dragging out? Its nearly been a year since Lord Kitchener was killed too. Oh well, nothing for it but to climb into the old kites once again and take to the skies...

...Right, now that you've had a stiff drink, its time to face some facts. The life expectancy for any pilot here on the Western Front is about two months, less for you new meat. In that time, its your duty to King and Country to take down at least one Harry Hun before you get picked off yourself - then we'll be even with the enemy. Take down two before you go and you'll have made it one up for Old Blighty!

Its that simple chum. Forget that codswallop about the "Knights of the Air" and "Chivalry in Warfare" rubbish. Get out there and kill Germans, and stay alive long enough to kill enough of them to make a difference.

Good Luck then! And if you are alive tonight, I'll see you in the bar where you are buying the first round!
