This mission is the worst day of my life. We thought for sure we were gone! Up to the target there was nothing of consequence happing. Two waves of enemy fighters approached our squadron, one flashed through our squadron and our little friends drove the other off. But just prior to the bomb drop, we took a flak shell in the nose. This killed two of our crew and required us to fall out of formation. It was a long trip home that saw a total of 16 German fighters trying to take us out.
