Our little friends drove off two fighters and two more missed us and went on to other ships in the squadron. Over the target we met up with a Fock-Wulf 190 Ace. He had many markings on his tail. The majority of the damage was from this fighter. Luckily he was driven off by fighters on his second pass. Flak was moderate and we took damage to the port wing flap due to a close burst. This was enough to effect Lt. Bush's aim and we missed the target. Leaving the target we encountered four Me109s. One was destroyed by the P51s and the other three were severely damaged by our boys. Everything was quite after that. Landing was a bit touchy as we could not retract the ball turret. Thankfully, Lt. Deane and I were able to put her down gently and we made it home without casualties.

Flak was moderate and somewhat accurate. Taking out our Starboard waist gun and rendering the Port wing flaps inoperable. Lieutenant Bush was on the mark again, putting around 30% of our eggs on target. On the way home we saw many fighters moving about, but none ventured in to attack us. This continued all the way home. Three enemy fighters approached, but our boys convinced them to miss and go to other squadrons. Flak did do a number on one of our engines. Causing a fire and rendering it inoperable. Lieutenant Bush was outstanding today. By placing 100% of our eggs on target we may not need to return to Kiel for awhile. The trip home was uneventful and we returned in good shape. This was our deep strike, and the boys were a tad uptight. Things went quite for the first leg out, with only one attack from the Germans. This attack was a new tactic we hadnt seen till today. A JU88 flew in high and dropped bombs on the squadron. This attack was quit ineffective, but it did spook the crew. If they prefect this technique we could see higher loss rates. In the target zone we saw our first fighter, only taking superficial damage from him. Flak was moderate as predicted and slightly accurate. We took minor damage to our control cables in the waist. Bomb drop was good and we turned out to face three ace fighters. Luckily they were flying in hot all but one missed us. One chewed up the port wing aileron. Besides one FW 190 raking us nose to stern, the rest of the flight home was tame. The good thing is, the boys are back in the grove and not spooked anymore. This mission was a bit dicer, we saw around 24 enemy fighters this time. Thanks to our little friends for chasing off around half. Once again our boys were hot, killing eight enemy aircraft outright. With both gunners MSgt. Parman and Sgt. Kiterk claiming three for each. Bomb drop was nice with a good placement.
