Reconciliation

Racial Reconciliation is the biblical value that calls us to build trusting relationships between the races, and through this practice of intentional community, to break down the dividing walls of hostility and display the power of the cross.

Reconciliation

"My prayer is not for them alone [the 1st century disciples]. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me." ~Jesus Christ (John 17:20-23 NIV)

It is appalling that the most segregated hour of Christian America is eleven o'clock on Sunday morning, the same hour when many are standing to sing: "In Christ There Is No East Nor West." ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Racial and ethnic hostility is the foremost social problem facing our world today... Racism --- in the world and in the church --- is one of the greatest barriers to world evangelization. Racial and ethnic hatred is a sin, we need to label it as such."
~Billy Graham

"The church is segregated now because that's what we like. In Martin Luther King's era, churches were segregated because whites didn't want to be around blacks. Now it's two-sided. Today we both choose to be separate."
~John Perkins

"The great tragedy today is not so much that our society is still divided along racial, cultural, and ethnic lines. The tragedy is, rather, that God's people, the church, are equally or even more deeply divided." ~Dr. Tony Evans

"I believe the road to true reconciliation will involve whites coming on our turf, eating our food, listening to our music, and being uncomfortable as they experience faith, history, and culture through our eyes...

Minorities have long been learning from white Christians. We have learned their hymns, read their books, practiced their theories. But it is time for whites to recognize they can benefit from minority perspectives on life and faith. If whites do learn from minority Christians, this will enrich, embolden, and strengthen the whole church.

The shift from whites saying, 'What can I do for you?' to 'I need you' would signal that perhaps words and deeds are starting to come together."

~Andrés T. Tapia

"I would permit no man, no matter what his colour might be, to narrow and downgrade my soul by making me hate him. With God's help, I believe I have completely rid myself of any ill feeling toward the Southern white man for any wrong that he may have inflicted upon my race... I pity from the bottom of my heart any individual who is so unfortunate as to get into the habit of holding race prejudice."
~ Booker T. Washington

Ephesians 2:14

For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility. (NIV)

Colossians 3:11

Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. (NIV)

2 Corinthians 5:17-19

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. (NIV)

Revelation 5:9

And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation. (KJV)

Organizations

We believe that the followers of Jesus are to step into this impasse as agents of healing. Within our ranks are representatives of every category of humanity. Trembling in our heavenly Father's presence, we see clearly the sins of humankind and have no inclination to cover them up. Thus, we are called to live out the biblical practice of identificational repentance, a neglected truth that opens the floodgates of revival and brings healing to the nations.

The Urban Alternative - a ministry of Tony Evans. "It is the mission of The Urban Alternative to equip, empower and unite Christians to impact individuals, families, churches and communities for the rebuilding of lives from the inside out. When each biblical sphere of life functions properly, the net result is evangelism, discipleship, and community impact. As people learn how to govern themselves under God, they then transform the institutions of family, church, and government from a biblically based kingdom perspective."

BridgeLeader Network - BridgeLeader exists to help move leaders of churches, colleges, companies, and other organizations toward multicultural effectiveness.

The Circle-Rock Partnership

"Heart of the City Ministries is a Christ-centered, music and worship focused ministry whose main function is to facilitate large, catalytic events dedicated to exalting Jesus Christ, refreshing believers and being a light in our city by uniting the Body of Christ in all its diversity of ages, races, sexes and denominations in celebrative worship and prayer through regular Heart of the City Worship Celebrations."

Books

In this stirring book, two friends-a black minister and a white businessman-discuss candidly the hang-ups, stereotypes, and sins that inhibit interracial friendships. Some people may think that racism is no longer a problem in our society, but David Anderson and Brent Zuercher make an effective case for just the opposite: both black and white people still harbor wrong assumptions and resentments toward each other.

In Let's Get to Know Each Other, Dr. Evans provides us with the answers, understanding, and encouragement we need to help break the bonds of separation and build a foundation united by Christ's love and saving power for all people.

Peart, creator of Grace Ministries and founding pastor of a multiracial church, offers a passionate challenge to church leaders to take up the cause of racial reconciliation in their congregations.

David Anderson writes about multicultural leadership not from the perspective of an ivory tower intellectual, but as a hands-on practitioner who loves and believes in the body of Christ. . . . If you believe there is no solution to the race problem, I urge you to reconsider and to learn from someone who is on the frontlines of making multicultural ministry a reality in the church today. - Bill Hybels, founding and senior pastor, Willow Creek Community Church

Dawson calls us to fulfill our "redemptive purpose" that God has placed in every culture, people and nation. That redemptive purpose is best approached through facing the walls or divisions, identifying with sins-- present and past, confessing them before God and men and then changing how we live. A major sin he deals with is our need to confess the endorsement and support for slavery over America's history.
