Barbara would like to host a challenge in the fall. "Mother Plays with Dolls" is a book written by Elinor Peace Bailey and there is a pattern for a doll in it. You can obtain a copy in the library.
The details:

epb modular doll challenge

get a copy of the book: elinor peace bailey/mother plays with dolls/ISBN (helpful number for interlibrary loan)0-939009-39-0 photocopy the pattern on the last page at the same size the directions say to enlarge 65% but that size takes more than a fat quarter of fabric.
I turned the pattern into a template so that I could avoid the smaller seam allowance at the book size to make a template.
bring a sheet of 81/2" x 11" paper
regular transparent tape
double stick tape
a pencil
scissors

Read the book to see the fabulous dolls that were created from the pattern and
get some ideas for your doll.

We will be making the doll in a class some evening in September / date, time
and place to be announced. Supply list will also be given.

Bring a fat quarter to be placed in a bag and then each person will select a
fat quarter (unseen) and use it to create a doll.

I hope that many of you will be interested and come to play. -Barbara Piano

The dolls would be due in January and it was suggested to have the challenge dolls in the Creative Festival booth.

Marion would be willing to teach an internet pattern called Cupid (free pattern on www.clothdollconnection.com at the August 27th meeting.

Next meeting June 11th: Gage will be wet felting a mask, there will be a GARAGE SALE and Sandy Serhant is listed as the snack fairy.

Present were Linda Farrelly, Donna Cohn, Edie Petrock, Darline Smith, Marion Bolson, Gerri Kenny, Audrey Wilvert, Janet Greenwood, Kathryn Shimmura, Cheryl Netter, Gage Evans, Stephanie Gauper.

We thanked Edie for having the meeting at her home. It is a beautiful place with a wonderful studio. We were surrounded by beautiful pine trees. A very pleasant retreat! Edie also provided the snacks which we appreciated.

Linda Farrelly is coordinating the Library exhibit that will set up on July 1st at the College Hill Library and will run for the whole month of July. We had this exhibit last year and it was very well received. We need your dolls for the exhibit and you can take them to Linda or bring them to the library on July 1st. Please check with Linda on drop off times and meeting time at the library. (Note: if you plan to enter a doll in the Adams County Fair, you wont be able to put it in the library show since they dolls have to stay in the case until the first of August)

We received confirmation on the Creative Festival booth and we have booth #3. The dates for the festival are February 3, 4 and 5 2006. The challenge this year is Enchanted Forest and is being coordinated by Audrey. Current committee members are Sandy, Darline, Linda F and Marion. Let Audrey know if you want to help. Audrey says Lisa Risler plans to donate for the challenge.

Christine Shively will be coming July 30th and 31st to teach her Beautys Beast class. The cost is only $75 for two days!! This is a great price and we still have room for a couple more people. Please contact Marion if you are interest (email below). Deposits of $30 are due on June 30th to Marion. She has the patterns and will be mailing them out as soon as deposits are received so you can study and get your supplies. Marion will check and see if there is any pre class work to be done.(Note: the Just Stuffed club in Colorado Springs is having Christine teach a couple of classes also. Let Marion know if you would like more information)

We passed around a sheet for everyone to voice their opinion on what class they would like Judy Skeel to teach at the Colorado Doll and Bear Extravaganza in October. The most votes were for her one day Treasure Purse class. I let Pat know and she is working with Judy to see if she wants to come and teach. If you did not get a chance to voice your opinion, go to Judys website below and check them out. If you would like you can send your thoughts on classes to Marion at Marion.Bolson@comcast.net . http://www.skeelhaven.com/classesandworkshops.html

The Treasures of the Gypsy challenge this year has the theme, The Adventures of the Gypsy. If you want to participate, send $15 to Pamela Armas, Treasures of the Gypsy, PO Box 748, Mountainaire, NM, 87036. You will get an envelope with a couple of fat quarters of fabric and embellishments to get your creative juices going. The dolls will be judged at the Houston Quilt Festival in early November.

The Estes Park Wool Market was discussed; it is June 15, 16, 17 for classes and June 18 and 19 for the Market. Gage still has a few spaces open in her classes. http://www.estesnet.com/events/woolmarket.htm

The Adams County fair was also announced and you can find the rules for doll and bear competition on line at http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/CoopExt/Adams/4h/fair/900openac.htm . This would be a great opportunity to enter your dolls. The judging method used does not compare one doll to another, but each doll to a standard. So you would not be competing against each other. County Fairs are struggling to stay afloat; this is your change to support a great tradition.

Other items: The Dollmakers Ink challenge on Gourd dolls http://dollmakersink.com/challenge.htm , the Amish Quilts at the Denver Art Museum http://www.denverartmuseum.org/microsites/amishquilts/; Edie is in 'Local Roots' at Foothills Art

Center http://www.foothillsartcenter.org/exhibition_schedule.html ; the Gilpin museum has a show which includes Gage's masks (hopefully everyone got to see Gage on HGTV Crafters Coast to Coast doing her wet felting; way to go Gage!); Tokyo Joe's has chopsticks strong enough for use as a tool; Patti Medaris Culea's new book, CREATIVE DOLL FACES, was circulated.

Candices Mermaid class will be on June 18th and 25th. If you are signed up but cant make it please let Candice know as soon as possible since others may want to fill your space.

Cheryl has gourds and Gage has grapevines if anyone needs any.

Various members brought items which did not so much shock and awe as cause rumination and pondering: Linda Farrelly had two sculpy heads, one cheeky and solemn; Donna had ideas from a garage sale puzzle, and ideas about fabric stamping; Janet had Raku beads; Kathryn had "Spirit Dolls"mixed media; Cheryl had cat Christmas ornaments, Stephanie had two dolls and some heads. Marion brought her dolls that she entered into the Kansas City Doll Fair Competition.

We also discussed for a long time what to do at upcoming meetings; June 11th Gage will be showing us wet felted masks (she will bring the supplies and asks for a $1 to be donated). We will also be having a GARAGE SALE at the June 11th meeting. Bring craft related items for sale or trade. A great opportunity to trade stashes!*grin*

July 16 will be chocolate ribbon candies by Janet; start gathering chocolate colored fabric ribbons and bring them to the meeting.

(Note: Does anyone have a problem with changing the August meeting date to the 27th? Marion cannot attend on the 20th and another program will need to be selected if the meeting is not changed) August 27 cupid doll with Marion..here is the web site for the pattern http://wwvisions.com/newsletter/jan_feb98/doll.html ;several new members are interested in basic doll making skills. Linda F. will be the snack fairy for August. If we need more time on this doll we may use the October 15 meeting also.

On September 17 we may have a wire and paperclay program by Kathryn but she needs to check her schedule. Audrey will be snack fairy in September. If the date doesnt work for Kathryn we will have the second Cupid doll class in September and possibly Kathryns program in October.

For the program, Audrey and Janet showed us how to make classy, top-drawer bears of all sizes. They went over choosing fabric, cutting, sewing seams, faces. We all coveted their bears. It was discussed whether we want to have Audrey and Janet conduct a bear making class. Please let Audrey or Janet know if you are interested.

Audrey asked for assistance in helping with the challenge for next years Creative Festival. Sandy and Darline agreed to help. The club voted on the name for the challenge. It will be Enchanted Forest

The club was reminded to get their dolls completed for entry into the Adams County Fair, July 29th and the Bear and Doll Extravaganza, October 8 & 9.

Judy Skeel has asked for help manning her booth at the Bear and Doll Show. Contact her if you are interested.

Linda asked members to start thinking about dolls they would be willing to part with for a month so we can display them at the library. We have agreed to fill the locked cases with our dolls for the month of July. We had a beautiful display last year and received many wonderful comments. You should bring the dolls to the June meeting or can come and help set up the display July 1.

The club voted to begin fining members without a name tag beginning with the June meeting. The name tag does not have to be fancy or even the official one. A piece of paper with your name is sufficient. There are so many new people, this will help us learn each others names.

Diana reported that Marilyn Houston would be willing to teach a class on sculpting clay heads for $250 plus airfare and room & board. Diana saw her work at the Kansas City Doll Fair. She said it was great.

Linda Benson passed out cards for Thompsons Hobby Shop. A super Wal-Mart went in across the street and closed off easy access to the shop. Those of us who have shopped at Thompsons know you can find items there that are hard to find at good prices. But they do not take credit cards, cash or checks only.

Barbara Pech mentioned three pottery shows/sales coming up. Front Range April 23, Westminster April 30 & May 1 and Arvadas. Contact Barbara for more details.

SHOCK & AWE

Barbara Pech brought a potters piece with people on it. It is a story telling plaque for the wall.

Anita Owens brought a thread lace bowl.

Bonnie Roberton brought a crochet bag

Candice Kleinbub brought a new mermaid.

Gage Evans brought a felt vessel, a felt mask, a felt jester (Chester), a felted scarf and pose able doll.

Diana Bennett brought the clay head she sculpted in Barbara Crawfords class. Her technique is to add clay rather than dig and carve out clay.

Janet Greenwood brought beaded bracelets.

Donna Cohen brought her drawings for her shaman figures.

Mary Bell brought a mermaid, Navajo weaver, and a matador. She makes everything- including all the accessories, except the base.

Stephanie Gauper had a beautiful jacket which incorporated both hand woven fabric and commercial fabric.

Darline Smith had a beaded bracelet she made in a class she took at the Pueblo Quilt show.

DOLL HELP

How do you attach a doll to the base?

Several suggestions were given -

Drill up from the bottom of the base and insert a long heavy needle (like a doll needle) up through the hole. Anchor the doll on the needle.

Incorporate a brass tube into the doll you are making. Insert another, smaller tube, into the base. After the doll is complete you can just slip the tube in the doll over the tube attached to the base.

PROGRAM

Diana Bennett explained two techniques she learned in making wings.

Candice Kleinbub led us through the process of making wings using interfacing and flower wire.

Thanks to both.

I forgot that we were supposed to bring in our dolls from the grab bag this month. I dont know when Ill bring mine in, seeing as I havent started it yet. I know you are all waiting with bated breath to see what Im going to do with those red Victorian boots that I just had to have!
