Comet Machholz

Comet Machholz C/2004 Q2 on 2/05/2005 from 1:51 to 2:00 UT. A composite of 17 thirty-second exposures for a total time of 8.5 minutes. Taken with 10" f/4 Meade LXD55 and Meade DSI camera. South is up and east to the right (because the telescope tube is east of the pier). The N-S field of view is 12.5 arc-minutes. The photo is cropped slightly E-W. The composite was made with Registax version 3.0. The contrast has been increased, but the color has not been adjusted and there is no unsharp masking.

Saturn's satellites

Saturn and 6 of it's brighter satellites. Photo taken at 2:15 UT on 1/22/2005 is a composite of 100 one-second exposures. Their names and magnitudes are labeled (north is up and east to the left). The contrast has been increased, and unsharp masking applied - both to increase the visibility of background stars and satellites. Optics and camera same as other photos. The faintest stars are about 15th magnitude.

Comet Machholz

Comet Machholz - same photo and scale as the photo to the left, but in black and white with intensity contours added. Note the coma is asymmetric in the E-W direction. The limiting magnitude of these photos is about 16. The star at upper-right is mag. 10.1. Contours added with the Meade Autostar Image Processing software for the DSI.

Comet Machholz on 2/28/05 MST

Comet Machholz on 3/01/2005 from 4:04 to 4:09 UT. A composite of 9 thirty-second exposures for a total exposure time of 4.5 minutes. Photo taken with 10" aperture f/4 Meade LXD55. South is up and east is to the right. The full CCD frame is shown with a field of 16.6 by 12.5 arc-minutes. The sky was hazy with variable clouds. The faintest stars shown are about 15th magnitude.
