May - Baby Pigeon

Critters seem to come in waves for me.  This year was the year of the pigeon; I had 1 baby, 2 adults with broken wings and one "teenager" with a head injury.

This guy here was my youngest.  I don't usually take baby birds but pigeons I can feed around my work schedule since they only need feeding every 4 hours (as opposed to every 20-30 minutes for songbirds!)

March - Homer

This is Homer, the "teenager".  He came to us already eating on his own and just learning how to use his wings.  I don't usually name wildlife as a rule but this one hung around so long after we opened up his cage we thought we'd be stuck with him.

We called him Homer because his head was bald - it looked like he'd been in some kind of altercation.   He really took to caged life.  In fact, we had a hard time weaning him first from his cage and then from our backyard.  But he eventually took off and we never saw him again.

The two adults we had came in separately with the opposite wings broken.  The vet wrapped them up and I gave them about two months of cage rest.  They also took their time leaving.  I caged them together and they seemed to get along - I wonder if they stayed together.

Squirrels

This is one of three squirrels that I "finished off" for another rehabber.  She did the hard work of raising and weaning them but didn't have a big enough cage to start their acclimatization so I took them for their final phase and "soft-released" them into my backyard.

Cottontails

Folks seem to either have really good luck with these guys or really bad.  They are tough to raise as they are extremely skittish and prone to dying from the shock of being handled, loud noises, et cetera.  I've so far been pretty lucky.  These guys I just babysat for a weekend for another rehabber.

December - Barred Owl
This was certainly the most exciting critter of 1997.  He flew into a car over on the east side of Lake George.  I only had him for one night and transferred him to a raptor speciallist.  She nursed him back to health and I hear he was successfully released even though he did have a permanent eye injury.
