Fairview Church of Christ

Here we will tell the story of the beginnings of our church and how we became what we are today.

CONDENSED FAIRVIEW HISTORY 1968-2004

· May 1968, a group of Christians in Austin began meeting at 2005 South Fourth Street in Austin. The regular attendance was 28-30 and an average Sunday contribution of $68.00.

· November 1970 the first assembly was held in the new building at 301 Ramble Lane.

· On December 6 a special dedication Roland McLean conducted service and Frank Duckworth held the first gospel meeting in the new building.

· November 21, 1969 Tom Norman and Bob Myers were ordained as elders and M.C. Whitt, Otto Sharpe and Earl Curry were ordained as deacons.

· September 1973 marked the beginning of a new regular schedule of speakers 1st Sunday James Beard of Kerrville, 2nd Sunday Open, 3rd Sunday Rolland McLean of Gatesville, 4th Sunday Elvis Fisher of San Antonio.

· February 1974 the congregation was preparing for a new pictorial directory with Ed Curry snapping the pictures. The average Sunday attendance in 1974 was 43 in morning service and 30 in evening service and 25 on Wednesday, with average weekly contribution was $182.24 with a budget of $260.

· May 20, 1974Rick Webb and family moved to Austin to work with Fairview.

· February 1980 the last payment was made on the church building and in November of 1980 the four lots west of the church were purchased.

· September 1982 the churchs building facilities were expanded with the addition of a storage building.

· January 1983 Susie Richburg and Sammy Amsler coordinated their efforts to produce new directories.

· In 1985, the city of Austin issued a building permit for Fairviews remodeling and expansion. In addition, when the loan application for the building was denied it was decided to settle for a facelift. The ladies of the church began a prayer partner program. Rick Webb and family moved to Amarillo after more than nine years of work at Fairview. The elders announced in August that Jim Bullock would move to Austin to work with Fairview beginning in October. On January 8 Jim Bullock ordained Dean Doggett as elder and Wayne Couch as deacon. Larry Shannon made and installed a picture board to help members become better acquainted and In 1985 Fairview hosted the first annual Hill County Singles Retreat at the 7A Ranch Resort in Wimberley on November 1-3. An all-time high attendance on a regular Sunday morning was recorded March 30, 1986. The count was 120!

· November 9, 1986 Wes Goheen was ordained as an elder and Don Thomas as a deacon. The congregation had it first Spring Song in 1987 with Ted Polk directing and produced its own singing group, The Fairview Four Quartet consisting of Rod Howell, David Petrosky JR, Jenny McCall, and Jennifer Williams. Other groups at the 87 event were the Gospel Lights from West Monroe, LA and the New Revelation Quartet from Dallas.

· Fairview celebrated its 20th year in 1988 with a homecoming meeting and workshop on discipline with Rick Webb of Amarillo. Jim Bullock and family moved to Lubbock. TX and Rolland McLean became minister at Fairview July 1, 1991. The family center was completed in 1994 and the auditorium remodeled in 1996. Bob Russell was ordained as Ministry of the Gospel in January of 1997. In March of 1999 additions were made to the Family Center. (Office space, library and additional storage) and Don Petrosky JR retires as deacon. Rolland McLean semi-retired in December of 1999.

· January of 2000 George McCall was ordained as Ministry of the Gospel and agreed in June to continue as minister at Fairview. Members today are actively involved with WBS, Bi-monthly Bible Study, Annual Spring Song, Monthly 4th Sunday Evening Fellowship, and Food Pantry for the Needy, Communion to the Shut-Ins and Womens Ministries. Today charter members are Mary and Earl Curry and Claudia Lohman.

· In August of 2004 the average Sunday attendance was 55 and the average weekly contribution was $1104. Fairview church leadership now includes: Elders: Earl Curry, Don Petrosky, and Don Thomas with Lee Moore serving as Deacon.

As we are told in Nehemiah 4:6, after the children of Israel returned to the Holy Land and began to rebuild their city and the temple of God, So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof; for the people had a mind to work.
