Welcome Back To School!

Smilie Face

Teachers returned to work on August 23, 2004 with some time for professional development and some time to work in the classrooms.

MATH:
I will be starting the year with basic review of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We will have some timed tests for multiplication to strengthen this skill as it is absolutely an essential foundation for all of our outcomes.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
We will begin this year with History's outcome 2. This unit can sometimes be overwhelming for sixth graders (and adults)
as the content is not something they are use to. The vocabulary can also be tough so please talk with your child often about what is going on in class. Check this web site for links, and study guides.

Check the calendar page for dates of homework, quizzes, and tests.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The first day assembly was from 11:00 to about 11:45 and it introduced the staff to the students. The RTC process was discussed along with school rules.

The Open House is scheduled for September 7th from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Please remember to check the district calendar for scheduled days off and half days. Central Office is aware of these dates first and should have them posted.

* If you have trouble supplying any of the items listed please contact me and I will make certain that your child has use of them for this school year.

Ringing Bell

I have been working this summer to get this web site running, find a grading program that can be accessed by parents from home, and looking over new curriculum for math and social studies. I am anxious to get the year started. I hope you are also anxious, ready to learn, and ready to help make this a wonderful year!

Suggested Materials

> Writing utensils
(black or blue pens; pencils)
> Correcting red pens or pencils.
(This makes grading easier as I can easily see who is grading and who is working)
> Scissors
> Crayons and or colored pencils
> Markers
> A writing notebook for each subject
o Language Arts
o Math
o Social Studies
o Science
o And one for miscellaneous use
> A three ring binder with tabs for each of the subjects
> A folder for completed assignments that need to be turned in
> A folder for completed assignments that have been turned in and grades recorded
o This is an important folder as students will tell me that they have turned in an assignment, but my grade book shows otherwise. If students keep their work in this folder they can easily check and show me the missing assignment. We grade a lot of assignments as a class and sometimes the student forgets to turn it in so that I can record the grade; and I will admit that sometimes I make the mistake.
o This folder can be cleaned out after every progress report as the student verifies grades and assignments turned in.
> Scientific calculator
o I will supply an order form for calculators that we normally use in the classroom, but any scientific calculator should work. Make sure it will do addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication of fractions.
> A Supply holder that easily fits into the binder to hold pencils, scissors, etc.
> Backpack
(check the locker size before investing in a wheeled backpack)
> Drinking water bottle with a pop up cap.
o This will be used for water only; no juices or pop.
> Box of tissue
o These are very important to the classroom noses!
