Ancestors of Martha A. Mathews
Generation No. 1
1. Martha A. Mathews, born May 29, 1858; died Unknown. She was the daughter of 2. Argallas H. Mathews and 3. Rebecca Carlisle Sullivan. She married (1) Perry E. Beadle April 14, 1877 in Genesee Co., Michigan. He was born Abt. 1855 in Michigan, and died Unknown.
Generation No. 2
2. Argallas H. Mathews, born 1816 in Vermont; died June 23, 1891 in Richfield Twp., Genesee Co., Michigan. He was the son of 4. James R. Mathews and 5. Elizabeth Sumner. He married 3. Rebecca Carlisle Sullivan January 1837 in Genesee Co., Michigan.
3. Rebecca Carlisle Sullivan, born 1818 in NY or VT; died April 22, 1863 in Genesee Co., Michigan.
Notes for Argallas H. Mathews:
Argallas was probably the richest and most influential Mathews in Richfield Twp.
He was mentioned in Ellis' "History of Genesee County" as having arrived in the county in June 1837. He came to Michigan by way of New Haven, VT, Orleans Co., NY, and Niagra Co., NY (living there 5 years). He may have been in Genesee Co., NY as well, because his wife was from there.
Upon his arrival he worked at Rufus Steven sawmill on Thread River for 6 months to save money to buy land and cut a road from Whitesburg to his property (prob sec 36, Thetford Twp). He also worked at Swartz Creek in Nov. 1838 and for Chaney Paynes Sawmill in June of 1839.
He owned 40 acres in Thetford Twp., sec 36 in October 1847. In 1848 Argallas bought Cook & Gordon Sawmill at Whitesburg (corner of Scott & Vassar Rds) and kept it for 5 years. In 1855 he erected a tavern on the SE corner of Sec 6, Richfield Twp, which he ran for 7 years before renting it and then selling it in 1865. In 1867, he built a home and store on the SW corner of sec 5, at the corner of Mt. Morris Rd and Irish Rd known then as Wheelers Corners, and later as Mathews Corners. In 1885, Argallas owned 66 acres in sec 5, Richfield Twp.
He also held several Township offices: 1843-1868 Constable; 1847 & 1863 Commissioner of Highways; 1861 & 1865 Town Treasurer. He can be found in the Census from 1850 to 1870 (house #297). Both his parents were born in the US.
His will at Genesee Probate made his brother Amherst W and son in law Nathaniel Hart executors.

5. Elizabeth Sumner, born August 30, 1784 in Wells, Rutland Co., Vermont; died February 26, 1823 in New Haven, Vermont. She was the daughter of 10. Ebenezer Sumner and 11. Jemima Hall.
Notes for James R. Mathews:
Information received from Pat Mathews, July 28, 2000
James Matthews of Vermont - not much is known of him officially. He held the offices of Hayward in 1805 & 1824, and School Officer for District 8 in 1812 and for District 3 in 1829 & 1831 and he was Surveyor of Highways in 1818 & 1822. He fought in the War of 1812 as a private, for 5 months in 1813 under Capt Charles Phelps and from April 12 to 21, 1814 under Capt Othneil Jewett in the Vermont Militia. He is mentioned in Congregational Church records of 1816 along with brother Joseph and father Issac. From 1815 to 1831 he lived in a house on South St in New Haven which still stood in 1982. By 1840 or 1850 he had moved to Middlebury, Vermont, and was in Bristol before 1864 when he died.
According to family history collected by Pauline Mathews (in the 1930's), Cyrus, Argallus, William, Witherby, Issac and Amherst W, were all brothers or half brothers, and James was their father. I have found no evidence of Witherby in Michigan. Willoughby is listed as postmaster of Richfield Center in Ellis, "History of Genesee County". Issac died rather early and very little is known of him. Argallus and Amherst were brothers as stated in Argallus' will. Cyrus names Argallus as his executor in his will without giving a relationship. All five were born in Vermont, yet came to Michigan from Vermont, Ohio and New York between 1836 and 1857 and settled within 5 miles of each other. This is a lot of coincidence if they were not related.
William is the only one whose parentage is stated on his death record (son of James and Betsy). He was made a freeman in 1840 while still in Vermont and later moved to Richfield Twp., Genesee Co., Michigan.
Milan Austurns Matthews is a recent find for this author. According to family history there was an argument, during the time Cyrus lived in Ohio, among family members as to whether Mathews would be spelled with 1 T or 2 Ts. Apparently it was such an awful disagreement that the two families parted ways and never spoke again. I had been unable to find any such Matthews family until 1999, when I found Milan A Matthews, son of James and Betsy Sumner Matthews of New Haven VT. Upon checking I found that Milan had been living in Lorain Co. Ohio (same as Cyrus) from at least 1835 when he married there until between 1843 and 1850 when he was found in St Joseph Co. MI. I know it was the same man as the wife and children match the family record I got on the net (LDS Library). He died in Indiana but was buried in Wisconsin, so his family moved further west. They must be the source of the name feud. Certainly every known relative in Genesee County spells their name with 1 T. Milan and Cyrus were close in age, if not twins. Cyrus has an alternate birth date of Mar 18, 1812 (source unknown) which is very close to the birth date given for Milan. I have not yet been able to contact any of Milan's descendants. He apparently had no surviving male descendants of the Matthews name.
The records in New Haven are very incomplete during the time we need them. None of the supposed children of James is mentioned by name in any Vermont record, yet in the census they are all listed as born in Vermont.
In the 1820 census of New Haven, Addison Co., Vermont, James R Mathews, born between 1775 & 1794, can be found with a wife of the same age and 8 children. Their age brackets are as follows:
male b. 1804-1810
male b. 1804-1810
male b. 1810-1820 could be Cyrus
male b. 1810-1820 Milan
male b. 1810-1820 could be Argallas
male b. 1810-1820 William
female b. 1804-1810
female b. 1810-1820
Family history of our Cyrus Mathews' says the father of Cyrus, lost his wife in 1823 (which is the same year Betsy died) and was left with 11 children (wow, 3 more children than in 1820 and in only 3 years). He probably remarried rather soon. Cyrus was apprenticed out and left Vermont by 1830.
I believe this evidence, though circumstantial, is enough for us to say confidently that the descendants of Cyrus are sons of James and grandchildren of Isaac of Vermont and through them to the Mathews clan of Yarmouth, Mass.

Notes for Cyrus A. Mathews:
Cyrus was born in Vermont, on either March 11, 1813 (from gravestone which was erected by his grandchildren) or March 18, 1812 (from family history). He died in Genesee County, Michigan, November 25, 1881 (gravestone has 1882). His will published in the Wolverine Citizen February 28, 1882, names Argallus H. Mathews executor. He leaves property to his wife, Lucretia, his daughters, Mary Uptegraph, Lucy Cox (of Lorain Co. Ohio), and Louisa Lown and to his sons, Edward and Orange. The will is on microfilm in the MacAvinchi Building, Registar of Deeds Office, Flint, Mi.
Cyrus' mother died when he was about 10 (1823) He had 10 brothers & sisters. His father bound him out as an apprentice to a currier, tanner shoemaker who lived forty miles from his home. At 18 (1830), he went to Ohio and worked for Hiriam Burke (found in 1840c in Newburg, Cyahoga Co, Ohio) where he met his wife. In 1830 census, a Cyrus was in Geagua, Co, Concord Twp, Ohio with a woman Lucretia's age and a young boy born 1820 to 1824. They moved to Burmingham , Ohio for 2 years until called to care for his wife's parents. In return, they received 60 acres of land on the Black River in Lorain Co.' Ohio, near Eleria (found 1840 and 1850 census, in 1850 at house #2056, and worth $1600, farmer). In 1853, he moved to Grand Ledge, Eaton Co., Mi.
In 1857, Cyrus and family arrived in Genesee County, Richfield Twp, MI. He kept tavern (probably the one owned by Argallas Mathews from 1855 to 1865) at Mathews Corners (Mt Morris & Irish Rds, also called Wheeler's Corners).
In the 1860 Census, he is listed on page 452, Richfield, house #514, with real estate worth $450 and personal property worth $500. He built a tannery and later went into the stave business which he worked at nearly all the rest of his life. In 1873, he owned 4 acres in sections 7 & 8 of Richfield (along Irish Rd just north of Teachout Rd) and 40 acres on section 9 (south of Mt Morris Rd between Gale & State). In the 1870 census, he was at house #199 in Richfield. Ken Mathews, his great grandson said, Cyrus farm was at 7326 Irish Rd, just south of the creek.
He was a Justice of the Peace in 1867. He was a Methodist and in 1860, he took over as leader of the sabbath school called the Cottage Class of Richfield, because they met at the Cottage School at Mathews' Corners (Ellis' History of Genesee County p418).

After the fighting at Turners Falls, in May of 1676, Indians attacked Hatfield with 600-700 men on May 30. Flames were seen from Hadley.
Major Talcott of Hartford with 450 men and Captain Henchman of Boston were sent to Hatfield. On the way each force met and defeated a party of Indians. Henchman's group killed 6 and captured 29 near Lancaster.
Samuel Sewall's diary for Monday, Oct. 19, 1685 reads: "News comes to town of Capt. Henchman's Death at Worcester last Thursday [Oct 15]; buried on Friday. Very few at his Funeral, his own servants, a whiter and black, carried him to, and put him in his grave. His wife and children following and no more, or but one or two more. Notes for John Stowe:
"STOWE ANCESTRY"
With his wife and six children, he emigrated to New England, arriving there, according to Rev. John Eliot's statement on May 17, 1634. Rev. John Eliot calls him "an old Kentish man". His wife's mother, Rachel (Martin) Bigge, emigrated to New England in the Spring of 1635, together with another one of her daughters, Patience, and the latter's son, Hopestill Foster.
Much of this information was learned after a call was issued for any lineal descendant of John Stowe, of Roxbury, Mass., to meet in Milford, Conn., pursuant to the organization of an association. Such a society was formed on January 07, 1869, and the name "Stow Association" was adopted. The association was to claim this legacy for the Stow descendants living in America.
The wills that were the subject of this investigation were that of Smallhope Bigg, clothier, of Cranbrooke, County of Kent, England, dated May 03, 1638, which names:
... "my sisters Patience Foster and Elizabeth Stow in New England. To Hopestill Foster, son of my sister - three hundred pounds. To Thomas and John, son of my sister Stow - two hundred pounds each. To Elizabeth Stow and the other three children (under age) of my said sister Stow"...
The will of John Bigg, of Maidstone, County of Kent, England, dated August 17, 1640 names:
..."My mother Bigg, my sister Foster, my brother Stowe, all these living in New England. Hopestill Foster, Thomas Stowe, John Stowe, Nathaniel Stowe, Samuel Stowe, my brother Stowe's two daughters, Elizabeth Stowe, Thankful Stowe"...
An instrument dated September 10, 1653, and recorded with Suffolk Deeds in England indicates that a dispute arose between the heirs of these estates, and the court was finally asked to settle their differences:
"Hopestill Foster of the one part and Thomas, Nathaniel and Samuel Stowe of the other part, all of New England, for the purpose of ending the "many & uncomfortable differences" which have arisen concerning the will of their deceased uncles Mr. Smallhope Bigg and Mr. John Bigg, both of the County of Kent in Old England, and which "have occasioned much trouble each to other p'tie & likewise uncongortable suits att Lawe," agree that each party shall "enjoy what they now enjoy namely Hopestill Foster or his assignes the one half of all those lands in Cranbrooke Withersham & Lidd which Mr. Smallhop Bigg gave unto Samuel Bigg his brothers Sonne & Thomas Stowe and his sonne John as heires to John Stowe his Unkle deceased and Nathaniel and Samuel Stowe the other half of the said land and likewise quitely & peacably to enjoy the lands of Mr. John Bigg of 60 a yeare or hereabouts which he decided as by his will exp'sed unto Hopestill Foster 15 a yeare, John Stowe 15 a yeare, Thomas, Nathaniel & Samuel, ye remainder."
John's burial place is unknown, but since he died before the opening of the oldest burying ground in Concord, it is probable that he was buried on the property of his sons Thomas and Samuel, in Concord, near the Sudbury Line.
Investors in the Massachusetts Bay Company, who were called "freemen", could each year elect a governor, deputy-governor, and eighteen assistants. These officials were empowered to make laws for the colony, admit new members, and defend the colony against land and sea attack. John was twice elected to the General Court (Assembly) from Roxbury, and was evidently a man of affairs, for his name appears frequently in the settlement of estates, as debtor or creditor, and the first nine recorded deeds in Roxbury bear his name as a witness. His original homestead in "Rocksbury" was near the present NE corner of Cedar and Highland Streets, Roxbury district, Boston, Massachusetts, and was between "the lands of Alcock, Newell and Ruggles". This is between Roxbury Crossing and Eliot Square. In a list dated between 1634 and 1643, entitled "Note of ye estates and persons of ye inhabitants of Rocksbury", he is credited with 253 acres of land, 20 goats, 8 kids, and an estate of 2 pounds, 17 shillings, and 6 pence. This places him as the eighth largest landholder on the list.
In 1648 John Stow was the first teacher in the First Free School in Roxbury, with board being provided for "Father Stow and his son", the latter probably being Samuel Stow. John sold his property in Roxbury on June 20, 1648, to John Pierpont, who later married his daughter Thankful, and moved to Concord, Mass. In October 1648 he joined in a petition to the General Court for the division of 4000 acres allotted to Roxbury, where he signed for 253 acres.

English Origins of American Colonists

English Origins of American Colonists, p.102
John Stow, according to the Rev. John Elliott's Record of Church Members, arrived in New England the 17th of the 3rd month anno 1634. He brought with him his wife and six children: Thomas, Elizabeth, John, Nathaniel, Samuel and Thankful. Elizabeth Stow, the wife of John Stow, she was a very godly matron, a blessing not only to her family but to all the church & when she had lead a Christian conversation a few years among us she dyed & left a good savor behind her.
English Origins of American Colonists, p.102
Through the publication in the New England Register, page 58, January, 1912, we have the records of the Parish of All Saints Church, Biddenden, Co. Kent, between 1558 and 1638, so far as they relate to the family of BIGGE and among them is that of the marriage 1608 of John Stowe and Elizabeth Bigge 13 September.
English Origins of American Colonists, p.102
In the ship Elizabeth which sailed 9 April and arrived in New England 17 May, 1634, bringing John Stow and his family, we also find his mother-in-law Rachel Biggs and, despite the fact that Mr. Waters in his GLEANINGS has given as much relating to the Bigge or Biggs family* , no light has ever been thrown upon the maiden name of Rachel, so that it was with much satisfaction that, among the Bigge entries of marriages in St. Mildred's Church, Tenterden, Co. Kent, published in the same number of the Register, was found 1583 ? John Bigge of Cranbrooke and Rachel Martin of Lidde, 14 September. In the McDonough-Hackstaff Genealogy it is stated that Rachel Bigg was born in or before 1579 and in view of the date of her marriage, it would appear that it was certainly before but, because of a mistake in the list of passengers on the Elizabeth, we cannot tell her age when she landed. In this list it is given as 6, which may have been meant for 69 perhaps if she was about 17 when married.
English Origins of American Colonists, p.102
Rachel Bigg made her will 17 November, 1646 and it was attested by Richard Peacocke, one of the witnesses, 30 June, 1647, her "sonne in law" John Stowe being Executor, so that Savage is in error in stating that John died in 1643. It would appear that he sold his land in Roxbury in 1648 and removed to Concord probably late in the year, as he made an Inventory of the estate of John Levins of Roxbury 30 August, 1648. He probably later removed to Middleton, Conn., and died there. His son Thomas went to Middleton in 1659 and Samuel removed there in 1652. HENRY W. BELKNAP."

"History of Roxbury" by Hon. E. Sterns
John Stowe of Roxbury, brought over his wife Elizabeth and six children born in England, in 1634. The came in the ship 'Elizabeth'. He came from Hawhurst, Kent, England, was made a freeman in 1634, Representative of Roxbury in 1639. In 1639 he owned 225 acres and had 21 persons in his family, owned 20 goats and 8 kids. Stern calls him 'an old Kentish Man'.
Notes for Elizabeth Bigge:
In records of the First Church of Roxbury, Rev. John Eliot, "the Apostle", says of her: "She was a very godly matron, a blessing not only to her family but to all the church where she had led a Christian conversation a few years among us. She died and left a good savor behind her."

Notes for John Stowe:
In 1660 John gave to the Grammar School at Roxbury, three acres of land in "the Great Lots", "to Clear his house", which probably referred to a pledge of the householders in Roxbury to contribute a stated sum annually toward the support of the pledge, thus clearing his house of encumbrance. Later, in the School Report is shown the income from that property.
He died unmarried.
v. Nathaniel Stowe, born October 07, 1621 in Biddenden, Kent, England; died May 30, 1684 in Concord, MA; married (1) Elizabeth Abt. 1652; born Unknown; died June 08, 1661; married (2) Martha Metcalf August 20, 1662; born March 27, 1628 in St. Bemedicts, Norwich, Norfolk, England; died December 26, 1717 in Concord, MA.

Notes for Samuel Stowe:
Samuel graduated from Harvard College in 1645, and assisted his father as a teacher in the Roxbury Grammar School, while preparing for the Ministry under the tutelage of the Rev. Maverick. He preached first at Chelmsford, later at Charlestown, Wethersford, Middletown, and Simsbury, later returned to Middletown, Conn., where he died.
He had several children but the name Stowe became extinct in his line with the death of his only grandson, who died unmarried in his twenty-second year.
vii. Thankful Stowe, born Abt. March 1628/29; died Unknown; married John Pierpont December 04, 1649; born 1617 in London, England; died December 04, 1684.
Notes for Thankful Stowe:
"Stowe Ancestry", J. Ronald Stowe
The date of Thankful's death has not been learned. She and John Pierpont had several children, some of whom died unmarried. It was from John Pierpont and Thankful, his wife, that the name Pierpont is perpetuated in this country.
The most prominent of their children was the Rev. James Pierpont, who seceded the Rev. Davenport in the pastorate of the Church in New Haven, and was largely instrumental in the founding of Yale College.
He was married three times; his first wife died only about four months after her marriage, his second wife had one child and died soon after. His third wife was Mary Hooker, granddaughter of Rev. Thomas Hooker, by whom he had a daughter who became the wife of the noted Devine Rev. Jonathan Edwards.
Aaron Burr, once Vice President of the United States, was also a descendant of his. The New Haven Historical Collection has a sketch eulogistic of the lives of James Pierpont and Mary Hooker, his wife.

Notes for John Stowe:
English Origins of N E Families Vol 3 Series 2
John Stowe the famous chronicler of the Kings of England, and surveyor of the city of London, a painstaking and voluminous writer, was the oldest son of Margaret and Thomas.
He belonged to the honorable company of merchant tailors, a company which has now the most splendid and best conducted school in the old city of London. He endeavored to make his living as a draper and tailor; but by his enthusiastic devotion to the study of antiquities, he exposed himself to many suspicions and persecutions, was all his days plagued with poverty, and after a long life spent in hard labor, he died in the depths of penury, leaving little behind him expect piles of MSS, to which posterity has paid all desirable honor.

Thomas Stowe, tallow-chandler, dwelt in St. Michael's Parish, Cornhill, London.
In his day a great prodigy occurred which excited the wonderment of the good citizens. The steeple of St. Michael's Church was famous for its superior chime of bells; and on St James's day, as the ringers were ringing, there came up a dreadful tempest of thunder and lightning, and suddenly there rushed in at the south window an ugly shapen sight, and lit on the north side; and presently the terrified ringers let go the bells, and lay as dead for fright. When they came to themselves, they found the stone sill of the north window razed, and scratched and marked with a lion's claw, as if (says the narrative) it had been a lump of butter. Stowe himself measured the depth of the print with a stick, and found it to be between two and three inches.
Thomas Stowe died in 1526 and his will is recorded in the Bishop's London Register.
