Irish Whistle Workshop (for those who refuse to play the bodhran) In this workshop, you will learn the basic structure of Irish Traditional Music; explore how the whistle fits in; discuss embellishments; compare and contrast learning by ear vs. learning by the written note; and you will learn the tune Rolling Waves. Be sure to bring your D whistle and a recording device! Irish and Scottish Songs You Won't Forget Come and sing songs of Ireland and Scotland. You'll learn several songs in different styles, and take home resources for learning more. Guaranteed to make your showers more interesting. Bring your kids and learn songs to make those car rides more fun. Cape Breton Step Dancing If you saw the show "Riverdance," you saw stepdancing. Unlike the dancing in "Riverdance," which is very structured Irish hard-shoe dancing, Cape Breton step dance is done purely for fun. It provides percussion to the music, and the steps are not done in any particular order. This workshop will teach basic jig and reel steps. Wear comfortable, hard-soled shoes that will make noise. Bodhran Workshp (for those who refuse to blow on a whistle) Learn the basic rhythms for Irish music (jigs, reels, etc.) including how to voice the drum and hold the tipper (the stick). If you don't have a bodhran to bring, then get a large new pizza box and I'll bring some basic tippers. Most of all be prepared to have fun.
Harp Workshop This will be a replica of a typical harp class held in Ireland. You will learn how Irish Traditional harp playing differs from other types you've encountered; also you will learn techniques for ornamentation and at least one traditional tune. Irish Traditional music is transmitted from teacher to student by ear and music notation is not used. During any social event in Ireland, no matter how informal, a tea break is essential. Real Irish tea will be served, like they make it east of the Atlantic. Bring your harp and a recording device! Ceili Dancing A ceili is a social gathering in Ireland, and the dances done at these sessions are lively dances done in sets of four couples. This instruction will teach some of the easier Ceili dances. No partner is needed.
