Project 68
Body Work-Rust and Other Carnage

Below are some pics of the results of years of Mid-Western winters and abusive previous owners.

passquarter.jpg

Quarter patches were put on by a previous owner. The panels don't fit very well and actually make the rear wider than stock. The sail panel is rusted through ont the pass side. I have full reproduction quarters and though I've heard they are difficult to work with I know it can't look worse than it does now.

There was only one bad spot on the upper dash and I initially cut it out in order to do a patch, but on further inspection it appears that ther is some rust repair needed under this panel, so it may need to come off after all.

This roof "repair" was also made by a previos owner. The patch and holes were covered with bondo.

These next three pictures are of the pass side wheel well. Fifteen years ago my dad actually paid a body shop to "repair" the holes in the wheel well and put in replacement shock towers. When we got the car back I wondered why there was fiberglass resin slathered all over the weld seams-but figured they knew what they were doing.

I'm going to attempt replacing the sheetmetal myself this time, I doubt it could look any worse than this when I'm done.

Under the car in the area where the factory muffler mounted actually looks pretty good....

...but the trunk pan is looking pretty sad. Look closely to see that there is a three square inch hole right in front of the drain hole and part of the support is also rusted away.

I'm not really sure what the original application is for this spoiler. It was on a '68 Camaro convertible when I bought it. At first I thought it was from a '69 Trans Am, but that does not appear to be the case. Nevertheless, it looks good and like it was made for the car.

Started to smooth the firewall in this picture. Note the closed hole for the heater core.
