Sports Guy's "Best Of"
for 2003 Basketball Season:

Best game: Corydon Central girls at North Harrison
A double-overtime thriller for bragging rights in the county.

Best team performance: See above.
Statistically it couldn't have been much better.

Best individual performance: Rachel Dixon's 54 vs. N.E. Dubois in Class 1A Loogootee Regional Final.
Gave it when team needed it the most.

Best boys team: Indianapolis Bishop Chatard.
As physical and balanced as they come.

Best girls team: North Harrison.
Can't argue with perfection through 20 games, then took eventual state-champion to brink in Class 3A Southport Semi-State game billed as "greatest ever."

Best cheer block: North Harrison's Cougar Crazies.
Fanatical, well-choreographed and most importantly, VOCAL.

Best band: Lanesville.
You name it, they play it. Kravitz, Beach Boys, everything.

Best program: Crawford County.
Useful in all forms. Includes team and individual records, plenty of room to keep score, photos and history of Wolfpack/Lady Pack basketball.

Best nachos: Orleans.
Excellent price ($1.50) with plenty of cheese and all the jalapenos you can shake a pinata stick at.

Best popcorn: Perry Central.
Still heads and shoulders above the rest. Ate three bags of the stuff. Almost went for four, but halftime was almost over.

Best overall concessions: Borden.
Franks, brats, burgers, chicken breasts, great nachos, jalapenos, good price.

Best shot: 65-footer by Forest Park's Adam Brames to end first quarter at 1A state final. (Second-best shot: 55-footer by Orleans' Brandon Stroud to end first quarter at Seymour Semi-State.)

Worst parking: Scottsburg.
Probably wasn't bad when the place was built, but this is 2003. Quarter-mile walks in the spring are fine, but basketball is a WINTER sport.

Best hospitality area: West Washington.
Quite a spread in Senator Country. Nachos, finger sandwiches, brownies, smokies, etc., etc., etc. The deer bologna was as good as I've ever tasted.

Worst hospitality area: Seymour.
Folks working it were extremely nice, but the food was downright cheesy. Cokes, chips, chicken salad sandwiches and cookies...that's it. And this was for a Semi-State.
