Gingery's method of building and boring out the head and tailstock is sheer genius. Actually it is very sound mechanical practice. By keeping the boring bar and thus the boring bar's tool bit stationary, and moving the headstock, you insure that both bearing bores in the headstock are perfectly aligned to the bed and share the same center axis. Then using the new headstock to bore the tailstock, you assure the center axis of both the head and tail stock are exact and true. |
